FAQ
Not every Adelaide project requires thermally broken steel windows. The appropriate system depends on the building’s orientation, shading, glazing and energy performance requirements.
A thermal break introduces an insulating barrier within the frame, reducing heat transfer. This can help limit heat entering during summer and escaping during winter.
Metro Steel Windows offers the Metro M40, which supports single and double glazing, and the Secco OS2 75, which incorporates a thermal break and supports high-performance glazing.
For Adelaide homes, glass selection should balance summer heat control with winter comfort. Our team can work with your architect and energy assessor to select a frame and glazing combination that meets your project’s specified U-value and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) targets.
Steel windows and doors may be suitable for Adelaide heritage renovations, subject to the property’s heritage status and applicable planning approvals.
For some homes the proposed design may need to respect existing window proportions, materials, glazing patterns and façade details.
Metro Steel Windows can manufacture custom configurations to suit heritage requirements and relevant planning authorities.
Confirm the approval requirements before ordering so the proposed windows and doors align with the property’s heritage obligations.
Custom steel windows and doors are generally a premium investment compared with standard aluminium products. Each Metro Steel Windows project is individually quoted to suit its design and performance requirements.
Pricing depends on dimensions, quantities, opening configurations, frame system, glazing, hardware and finishes. Arches, pivot doors and complex configurations can also influence fabrication and engineering requirements.
Provide our team with your drawings, window and door schedule, and any energy or acoustic requirements so we can prepare an estimate with a clearly defined scope.
Properly specified, coated and maintained steel windows and doors can provide long-lasting performance in coastal locations.
Metro Steel Windows uses a galvanised steel substrate, followed by a multi-stage protective paint process.
Together, the galvanised substrate and protective coatings help resist corrosion and protect the steel from moisture and salt exposure.
Coastal properties require regular cleaning to remove salt deposits, along with inspection of coatings, seals and hardware. Advise our team of your property’s coastal exposure when requesting a quotation, and follow the instructions in our Care & Maintenance brochure.
Metro’s steel windows and doors have not been independently bushfire tested to achieve a Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rating. However, suitable configurations can meet the Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) construction requirements of AS 3959:2018—Construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas.
For BAL–12.5, BAL–19, BAL–29 and BAL–40, these requirements address frame materials, glazing, seals, hardware and screening, depending on the product type and its location. Steel framing is an accepted material, but compliance depends on the complete specification and installation.
For projects in the Adelaide Hills or other bushfire-prone locations, please provide your project’s BAL assessment when requesting a quotation so we can review the required configuration. The proposed details and supporting documentation should be confirmed with your building surveyor or certifier.
BAL–FZ requires a separate review, including appropriate tested system evidence or protection by compliant bushfire shutters. Metro’s standard steel windows and doors should not be assumed to meet BAL–FZ.
Metro Steel Windows offers glazing options to suit Adelaide homes’ thermal, acoustic, privacy and safety requirements.
Metro M40 supports single and double glazing, while Secco OS2 75 supports double and triple glazing. Options include low-E glass, acoustic laminated glass, and clear, tinted or patterned glass, subject to the selected system and configuration.
For Adelaide projects, glazing should balance summer heat control with winter comfort. Homes near busy roads or flight paths may also benefit from an acoustic glazing specification.
Our team can recommend a suitable combination based on your energy and acoustic requirements, applicable safety-glazing requirements, and the system’s glass thickness, size and weight limits.
Both steel and slimline aluminium can suit contemporary Adelaide architecture. The visual differences depend on the specific systems being compared.
Steel’s structural strength allows for slender profiles and generous areas of glass. It also offers flexibility for custom arches, glazing patterns, pivot doors and internal partitions, making it suitable for contemporary homes and heritage-inspired renovations.
Slimline aluminium can also achieve clean lines, but frame dimensions, meeting stiles and junction details vary between products. The clearest comparison is to review drawings or samples of the proposed systems.
Metro Steel Windows can provide profile and configuration details so your architect can assess sightlines, proportions and performance together.
Metro Steel Windows’ standard lead time is 10–14 weeks from shop drawing approval. Allow additional time beforehand for design coordination, drawing preparation, revisions and approval.
The process includes confirming your specifications, preparing shop drawings, obtaining approval, manufacturing the frames and coordinating delivery to your Adelaide project.
Contact our team early with your drawings, site location and required timeframe.
