FAQ
Steel can rust if left unprotected. However, properly specified, coated and maintained steel windows and doors can provide long-lasting performance in coastal Queensland environments.
Metro Steel Windows uses a galvanised steel substrate, followed by a multi-stage protective paint process. Together, the galvanised substrate and protective coatings help resist corrosion and protect the steel from moisture and salt exposure.
Coastal locations require regular cleaning to remove salt deposits, along with inspection of coatings, seals and hardware. The appropriate specification and maintenance requirements are outlined in our Care & Maintenance brochure.
Yes, when the frame system and glazing are selected to suit the building’s location, orientation and energy requirements.
For Queensland homes, reducing solar heat gain through the glass is a key consideration. Appropriate low-E or solar-control glass and double glazing can help improve comfort and reduce cooling demand.
Metro Steel Windows offers two systems:
- Metro M40: Supports single and double glazing, including low-E glass.
- Secco OS2 75: Incorporates a thermal break—an insulating barrier within the frame that reduces heat transfer—and supports high-performance glazing.
The best solution depends on the performance required for your project. Our team can work with your architect and energy assessor to select a frame and glass combination that meets the specified U-value and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) targets.
Steel’s structural strength allows for slender frame profiles that support generous areas of glass with less visible framing. This makes steel an appealing choice for expansive views, natural light and architectural designs where slim sightlines are a priority.
Steel also offers flexibility for custom configurations, including arched windows, French doors, pivot doors and internal glazed partitions. Its distinctive appearance suits both contemporary and heritage architecture.
Compared with timber, steel is less susceptible to moisture-related swelling and warping. Compared with aluminium, steel is roughly three times stronger by weight. For coastal Queensland projects, appropriate corrosion protection and ongoing maintenance are essential.
The best choice depends on your design, budget and performance requirements. Metro Steel Windows offers the Metro M40 and thermally broken Secco OS2 75 systems, with glazing and finishes selected to suit your project.
Properly specified and finished steel windows and doors require routine cleaning and care to maintain their appearance and performance.
We recommend cleaning the frames and glass regularly, checking protective coatings for damage, and inspecting weather seals and hardware. In Queensland’s coastal areas, cleaning is particularly important to remove salt deposits that can contribute to corrosion.
Cleaning frequency depends on the property’s location and exposure. Follow the cleaning, inspection and hardware care instructions in our Care & Maintenance brochure.
Metro Steel Windows’ standard lead time is 10–14 weeks from shop drawing approval.
We supply projects throughout Queensland, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. Delivery arrangements are coordinated to suit your project’s location and scope.
We recommend contacting our team early to discuss your design, glazing, finishes and required delivery timeframe so these can be considered in your project schedule.
The Metro M40 system can be engineered to suit specific wind-load conditions, with requirements assessed on a project-by-project basis.
As a fully custom system, M40 offers flexibility to modify frame configurations, reinforcement, glazing and hardware to address the needs of your project.
AS 2047 covers the performance of windows and external glazed doors, including structural strength, water penetration resistance and air infiltration. Compliance depends on the complete system and supporting performance evidence.
Provide our team with your project’s wind classification or specified design pressures so we can assess suitability and advise on the engineering and documentation required.
Yes. Modern steel window and door systems can accommodate double or triple glazing, depending on the profile selected. Metro M40 supports single and double glazing, while Secco OS2 75 supports double and triple glazing.
For Queensland homes, glass selection should address solar heat gain as well as insulation. Low-E glass can help manage heat, while acoustic laminated glass can help reduce noise from roads, aircraft and neighbouring properties.
Triple glazing is not automatically necessary for Queensland’s climate. The appropriate combination depends on your home’s location, orientation, shading, energy targets and acoustic requirements.
Our team can recommend a frame and glazing configuration to suit your project, subject to the selected system’s glass thickness, size and weight limits.
Yes. Metro Steel Windows custom-manufactures internal and external steel windows and doors for Queensland homes, including arched frames, pivot entry doors, French doors and internal glazed partitions.
Steel’s strength allows for slender profiles across a range of custom shapes and configurations, making it suitable for contemporary coastal homes, traditional Queenslanders and heritage renovations.
Each design is assessed against its dimensions, glazing, hardware and structural requirements. For external windows and doors, we also consider the project’s wind loads, weather exposure and energy requirements.
Our team can work with your architect or builder to develop a configuration that suits your design and the conditions at your Queensland property.
Metro’s steel windows and doors have not been independently bushfire tested to achieve a Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rating. However, suitable configurations can meet the Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) construction requirements of AS 3959:2018—Construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas.
For Queensland projects assessed as BAL–12.5, BAL–19, BAL–29 or BAL–40, these requirements address frame materials, glazing, seals, hardware and screening, depending on the product type and its location. Steel framing is an accepted material, but compliance depends on the complete specification and installation.
Please provide your project’s BAL assessment when requesting a quotation so we can review the required configuration. The proposed details and supporting documentation should be confirmed with your building certifier.
BAL–FZ requires a separate review, including appropriate tested system evidence or protection by compliant bushfire shutters. Metro’s standard steel windows and doors should not be assumed to meet BAL–FZ.
